At 11 am we started seeing land as we go from the Philippine Sea through some straits and bays.
I went on a tour of the ship’s Kitchen (the galley) today, where 96 people work. It was quite impressive since this is where they prepare meals for approximately 1380 guests and almost 620 crew members. Below is an example of the average weekly consumption of some of our stables:
Fish 1,875 Ibs
Seafood 2,575 lbs
Vegetables 12,500 Ibs
Potatoes 4,750 lbs
Ice cream 200 gallons
Rice for crew 2,100 lbs (guess the mostly Asian crew eat different rice than we do.
Assorted Wines 1,636 bottles
This afternoon I attended an art auction that was put on by the Watercolor class onboard the ship. I was very impressed with the artistic talent of my fellow passengers, therefore I made at least 5 bids and I was quite excited when one of my bids was the highest. So I am now the proud owner of a painting of a tropical fish that will forever remind me my snorkeling adventures. This auction and a matching gift from Holland America ended up contributing $6000 to Hospicio de San Jose which is a Catholic home for orphans and the elderly. A very worthy cause. I understand that they have a group of dancers that are going to perform for us on our last night in Manila.
