Day 99–April 14–Civitavecchia, Italy

I decided on this 99th day of traveling that I needed a break from serious tourist business so I declined the 2 hour long train trip into Rome (I had been there many years ago).  I felt that maybe I had made a mistake about not going into the big city but then I discovered Civitavecchia.  This is where we are docked.  It is the main port city for Rome.  So happily I threw myself into exploring this compact and easy to navigate city.

I only had a few objectives:

To get my hair cut

Shop for some “Made in Italy” Bargains

Find an internet café

Relax and do some leisurely strolling

I was successful in all my endeavors

Beauty Parlor  My Italian Salon

I stopped at a Pharmacy to get some aspirins and the pharmacist gave me directions for Jean Louis David’s Salon.

Beauty Parlor  She cut and styled my hair.

They only spoke a few words of English but I’m pleased with the results.

Laundry  Laundry

And once again we see laundry hanging off of apartment terraces.  I wanted to buy some Italian clothes pins but couldn’t find any.  They also have this cute little device to hang your small items, couldn’t find that either.

Public water supply  A man pumping water from a public supply

Port City  Scene from my walk

It was very chilly and windy.  I really miss my good fleece jacket, I can’t believe that I forgot to pack it.

Beach walkway  The Beach Promenade

Cathedral of San Francisco  The Cathedral of San Francisco

I went into this church to see the two statues of St. Francis of Assisi.  A mass was going on so I knelt and prayed for awhile.  The priest was an African man who said the mass in Italian (what a wonderful world we live in).  Before leaving I lite a candle.  On the steps of the church I dropped a Euro coin into a female beggars hat.  It’s humbling to see the poor as you are traveling the world on a cruise ship.

Teen-agers  Wonder what these guys are up to?

I found an internet café where the locals go and once again thoroughly enjoyed myself as I downloaded a couple of blog entries and emailed family and friends while listening to that lovely Italian language being spoken in the background.

Blessed Mother  Blessed Mother

This statue was near the bus stop where we caught the shuttle back to the ship.
